Research tips in the private sector: From topic selection to social implementation
Lecture, The University of Tokyo, 2026
As part of the course “4840-1055: Non-Research Tips for Information Science Researchers” I was invited to give a lecture at The University of Tokyo on research best practices in the private sector. In this lecture, I compared the research cycle that students experience in a university environment (topic selection, paper survey, hypothesis evaluation, paper writing, publizicing results) with the cycle that normally takes place in a private company. One key difference is the concept of “social implementation” as an alternative output to research papers, and a way of connecting research results with societal problems. In particular, this strongly changes the paradigm of deciding your research topic. On the other hand, there are common elements in company research, such as paper surveying and writing, for which I provided several tips on how to conduct them efficiently via AI tools, time management, etc.
